This is kind of cool, I think: my words appear on this WordPress landing site.
Scroll down about halfway to “Voices from our community.”
Nothing earth-shattering, and just an excerpt from a blurb that will appear in a week or two, but perhaps it will find a few poetry lovers…
Congratulations, Bob, but would it be terribly mercantilistic (or etiquette-heavy) of me to say that they should have notified you beforehand? I’m not sure what all the fine print says when one agrees to WP’s Terms of Service, but I suspect it says that they can ‘use’ any WordPresser’s content. To me, it’d be like Facebook taking a photo from my personal page (say of a child or something) and using it in an ad. I don’t know. Somewhat mixed feelings here for me, too!

Not to worry. This is excerpted from something I wrote at their request. All is good. 🙂

I would most definitely object to someone using my writing without my permission, but such is not the case here.

I agree with Leigh. I think it’s awesome to be spotlighted, yet I would think it necessary to first provide notice to the writer, at a minimum. I can think of a number of circumstances where the subscriber cited might not want the attention and I think it is good business to defer to author’s consent to be named. An alternative is to use the content, but cite it as anonymous. Despite that, if all folks agree, then this is great.

As I mentioned, this was written in response to a request from them. I don’t believe they’d bother extracting blurbs from unsuspecting bloggers, as that could be troublesome. It’s so much easier to ask. They did, and I responded.

Ah – great. I missed that, Robert. Poor read on my part. Although I would not put it past other sites to leverage your content without any additional consent other than agreement to the initial terms of your subscription. Congratulations on a wonderful showcase for your work!

I tend to be cautious about these things – I won’t submit to publications that demand exclusive rights, or that want to retain copyright for a certain period of time, unless they’re willing to negotiate.

You are differentiating here between a submission and a post – yes?

Definitely, Chagall! It seems to me also a matter of politeness and collegiality, beyond all the business or (N)etiquette aspects

And thank you, Leigh, for thinking of my best interests. I do so appreciate your kind thoughts and generosity.

Hey, do poets (named Robert Okaji) need agents? 😉 Secret agent woman maybe? …

I like the idea of Secret Agent Woman, but I’m afraid my annual earnings would net the agent the price of a cup of coffee. At a diner, not a coffee shop. 🙂

They’ve made a nice choice to represent both the platform and the forum within. I second the motion!

Sometimes not knowing where you’re stepping can be quite rewarding. Of course it’s often painful, too. 🙂

It is kind of cool! Do you think perhaps all times were/are curious though, to those living it?

It probably depends upon one’s perspective. Having food, shelter and healthcare certainly makes it easier to think such thoughts. 🙂

It seems they replaced my little blurb with one from the International Fertilizer Development Center, which somehow seems appropriate. 🙂
