Poems of Protest, Resistance, and Empowerment
Check out this poem sampler the editors of the Poetry Foundation have provided. Some of the usual suspects are there, of course, but look further to find Danez Smith’s “Tonight in Oakland,” Ilya Kaminsky’s “We Lived Happily During the War,” Heather McHugh’s “What He Thought,” and much more.
More poetry! More resistance!
Thank you! I greatly appreciate this.

Thanks for sharing this Bob. I chose one simply cause I know a guy called Zbignew and this other Zbignew didn’t disappoint. I will bookmark and read the others as time permits (though maybe there should be a little more urgency in reading on this subject matter!).

I thought of Carolyn Forché when I read the title so was surprised that hers was not included in the ‘sampler’.

A bit surprising, wasn’t it? And of course they could have just put links to the anthology she edited, Against Forgetting: Twentieth-Century Poetry of Witness, which is a bit Euro-centric, but nevertheless impressive and heart-wrenching.

A friend recommended her The Country Between Us some thirty years ago. It remains one of my favorite books even after all these years.

I have that one too. Carolyn was at Hedgebrook while I was there in 2008.

Lucky you! I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting or hearing her in person.

She invited me to visit and stay with her but I never made it.

Wow! Thanks so much for posting this is great! Blogging (non poetry) had re-opened a door to reading poetry that should have been re-opened a long time ago. I appreciate the post! Me: https://goldisfromaliens.com/2017/02/17/we-both-wear-spanx-and-other-things-i-have-in-common-with-donald-trump/
