Historian Lawrence Britt studied the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia), and Pinochet (Chile) and found they had 14 elements in common. He calls these the identifying characteristics of fascism.
- Powerful and Continuing Nationalism
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays. - Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights
Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of “need.” The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, and long incarcerations of prisoners. - Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause

I might be mistaken or overcritical, but it seems a fair proportion of the List are already in practise by most of our so called Democratic governments, but I suppose my total disillusionment these days, lends me to my sarcastic opinions…..

It’s incomprehensible… The great polarization we’ve been warned about. It’s like the 50’s and 60’s all over again, only much, much worse because we have a “leader” who sides with hatred and division and… well, everything on the list. Thank you for posting it, Robert.

Me too. But then I hear some good news now and then – of people beginning to wake up, of rising consciousness among certain groups. And I have hope. There are some glimmers of light here and there…. 🤞 Envisioning, with fingers crossed.

Posting this on your site might seem a radical digression. But perhaps not if one views this as a searing prose poem, not to be digested or “understood” solely through intellect, but rather as transportation into the heart and guts of those who will feel the weight of such policies, or even ourselves, an abstract litany, a way of telling me what I (and what we all) have to lose. Not pretty.
