About

A poet considers the intersections of language and numbers, connections between disparate entities – the currents stirring within the Phoenician iteration of our letter M and the Japanese character for water, mizu, or the intertwined strands of solar wind and shadows, black-chinned hummingbirds and  coastal death rituals – all, of course, while contemplating good food and that most magnificent of elixirs, beer, which may have been the very foundation of civilization. Or not.

  1. Your intelligence, perspectives, interests, and ability to express yourself through language, so eloquently and artistically, is something I admire deeply and strive for in my life. You are a great inspiration to me – I just wanted to tell you that. 🙂

  2. Good Morning…at first it freaked me out to think people were reading my writing…made for a long navel gazing session on why I write, if not to be read… there’s a long answer to that. Suffice it to say, I appreciate that you read me…and I am particularly fond of pinecones, like your picture here… how they open and close with a change of moisture…I keep some lined up on my back porch, just to get the precipitation report.
Wishing a prosperous 2016, and more good than bad memories of 2015.

  5. I wanted to thank you for stopping by my blog and sharing in the words. Your written words resonate with a clarity of wisdom and depth that is rooted in peace. As someone who is new to blogging, and just venturing out as a public writer- it can provide some interesting avenues of exploration. Currently, I write on an island from home- maybe all writers write on islands. You have achieved success in putting your voice out there- as someone who I look towards- is there any wisdom you could bestow upon me? If I want to be a writer- all I need to do is write- but what would you recommend as my next steps? Do you see a future as a published poet? I really want to put my narrative, Puddle Deep, which is already finished- about my experience in teaching- and as a wrongly accused teacher in the case, Vergara vs. State of California- funded by a billionaire…- long story…I am intrigued by the potential insights you could share- where you see me going- anything would be helpful. Thank you for your thoughts- your time is appreciated. Regards, Anthony Mize

    • I’m not certain that I have any wisdom to share, and without knowing your specific goals, I can’t recommend any steps to take. But I can tell you what brought me, at least in part, to create this blog: readers/community. I’m a non-academic, with no graduate degrees (no MFA, etc.), lacking the network/contacts that naturally form within writing programs. So I sought to find readers, to “build” my own community of sorts. And here we are. I don’t know what your question “do you see a future as a published poet” means. Are you asking whether I hope to realize financial gain, perhaps make a living or supplement my income from poetry? If so, the answer is no. If you’re asking whether I believe this blog will help me find publishers and publishing opportunities, the answer is most definitely yes. It has provided some wonderful and significant opportunities that I would not otherwise have had. Feel free to ask more questions – if I can provide any useful advice, I’ll certainly make the effort. 🙂

  9. Delightful perspectives!
Always enriching to encounter another poetic voice expressing observations some might dismiss … those make the best poems!
