Thank you, Leslie and Ellen. I write these things and send them out into the world, never expecting much to come of them. This was a pleasant surprise.
My experience with fiction is that our writing goes out into the world and leads a life we know nothing about. I’m a thoroughly obscure writer but I’ve brushed up against the edges of that life once or twice and it gives me a sense of hope.
Thank you! When I was in the navy – way back in 1982 – my ship crossed the equator, and I, along with a good portion of the crew, had to endure the initiation/celebration festivities for first-time crossers.
Reblogged this on SLHARPERPOETRY and commented:
Quick clarification! I am not the winner in question, alas, but my dear, talented, generous, wickedly brilliant, and did I say talented?, friend, Robert Okaji, IS the man of the hour, for his wonderful poem, “Sault Ste. Marie.” I’m so pleased for you, and proud, Roberto!
Oh man! I would rather win the goat catching contest… because I would love to see the trophy for such a thing!
Actually, this just shows what a genius you are… as goat catching contest is a perfect metaphor for being a modern poet trying to do their work in a socio-economic climate that is not designed at ALL to reward truly creative work, let alone poesy! Your whole career of letters is/has been a goat catching contest!! 🙂
Goat catching competitions… that is the greatest thing ever! If they let me enter the competition holding a long rope….with a cheetah attached to it, I’ll bet I would catch a lot of goats!
Absolutely! The title is “Goat Catching Competition”… not “Human Attempts to Catch Goats Using Nothing But Human Abilities”. If fishing competitions allow fishermen to use rods and reels, then I can use a rope and cheetah. Same with pie eating contests… if I am the oldest competitor to enter then I should automatically win, as I have eaten the most pies over my lifetime! The contest should renamed be “The ‘Pies We Have Here’ Eating Contest” otherwise! 🙂
Yes, my reasoning should be the gold standard for all pie and goat related contests! Ja, das ist der richtige Weg zum Nachdenken, oder!! Alle hagel meine Gedanken!!! 🙂
(Incidentally, you might wonder why I used “oder” at the end of a concluded sentence. Like the Canadian “eh?”, “oder” (“or” in German) is used as an expression of “wouldn’t you agree?”, “is this so?”, or “this is the case”, a little colloquial South German thing).
I like how you open with “It seems…”, like you were walking along, tripped and your poetry accidently fell into the hands of a publisher who gave it the award!
Congrats! You deserve ‘all the prizes for everything’!!
Most of my publications feel like accidental landings; you never know what’s going to stick. This poem had been rejected by various publications over the past year, but I still believed in it. So off it went…
Rejection is so completely and utterly important and necessary to help any artist develop thick skin, and remain focused on their work. Honestly?
Congrats on the rejections, too!
I agree! Am still trying to break my record of 19 rejections in one month. Now that’s submissions, not the number of poems, which was greater than 60. Maybe next month!
Of course it took years of writing to attain that level of failure. And the stars had to align, as the submissions had been spread out over the preceding six months or so. Half that many would be a notable accomplishment for me – that month was special!
Too often you see yourself and wonder
which bodies ancestors navigated
to gather such glorious scars and wrinkles
in one place, both noticeable and unseen,
that link between transmigration & countenance is so beautifully handled. Such a complex yet delightfully simple correlation to make.
In my opinion you should win every poetry contest. Congratulations!

Writers are a curious blend of optimist and pessimist. We send out our work, expecting rejection. But we persist!

Ah, and at the time likely no appreciation of initiation as fodder for future poems! Now you can celebrate with due dignity.

Sure, or at least they used to exist. I was a kid, probably 8 or 9. But I never could catch those damned greased pigs! The goat was easy.
