  Thank you! When I was in the navy – way back in 1982 – my ship crossed the equator, and I, along with a good portion of the crew, had to endure the initiation/celebration festivities for first-time crossers.

    Actually, this just shows what a genius you are… as goat catching contest is a perfect metaphor for being a modern poet trying to do their work in a socio-economic climate that is not designed at ALL to reward truly creative work, let alone poesy!         Absolutely! The title is “Goat Catching Competition”… not “Human Attempts to Catch Goats Using Nothing But Human Abilities”. If fishing competitions allow fishermen to use rods and reels, then I can use a rope and cheetah. Same with pie eating contests… if I am the oldest competitor to enter then I should automatically win, as I have eaten the most pies over my lifetime! The contest should renamed be “The ‘Pies We Have Here’ Eating Contest” otherwise! 🙂

        (Incidentally, you might wonder why I used “oder” at the end of a concluded sentence. Like the Canadian “eh?”, “oder” (“or” in German) is used as an expression of “wouldn’t you agree?”, “is this so?”, or “this is the case”, a little colloquial South German thing).

        Of course it took years of writing to attain that level of failure. And the stars had to align, as the submissions had been spread out over the preceding six months or so. Half that many would be a notable accomplishment for me – that month was special!
