Politics
No snakes here,
but a little voice
says the mice
will return,
and which
do you prefer,
the one that
gnaws open
ramen packages
then craps
on your plate
or the one
who takes
its prey
under the house
and swallows
it whole,
leaving
no bones
behind?
i’m amazed we’ve even made it this far.

URGENT MESSAGE TO ALL AMERICANS
You guys… you have an EXTREMELY powerful anti-TruMp tool in your hands and you don;t even know it.
1. ALL YOU AMERICAN FOLKS have local/state senators and congressmen.
2. A HUMAN WILL ANSWER IF YOU PHONE 202 225 3121. They HAVE TO respond to your concerns, log them, address them, if you PHONE them. THEY WILL CONNECT YOU TO YOUR MEMBER OF CONGRESS or the appropriate SENATOR IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHOM HE/SHE IS. They do this by asking you your zip code, which immediately connects you to the right person.
3. IF YOU PHONE THEM DAILY THEY WILL HAVE A LOG OF “THE PEOPLE’S DESIRES/OPINIONS AND WHOMEVER ACTS THE MOST WILL BE “THE PEOPLE”.
4. PHONE 202 225 3121 NO MATTER WHERE YOU LIVE.
YOU ABSOLUTELY CAN STOP ANY/ALL SNAKES IF YOU, YES YOU…. WHOMEVER IS READING THIS RIGHT NOW WHO IS AN AMERICAN CITIZEN. DO IT ONCE A DAY, AND THE GOVERNMENT WILL DO THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE WHO BADGER THEM LONG ENOUGH TO DO THE RIGHT THING.
I am a Canadian by birth. I was born and raised in Canada, which is a model for democracy considered by most Americans as very close to being ideal. How do you think it is we have functioned so well for all these years?
BECAUSE WE HAVE ALWAYS PHONED OUR LEADERS AND TOLD THEM WHAT WE WANT, OVER AND OVER UNTIL THEY REALIZED THEIR BEST CHANCE OF GAINING POWER WAS DOING WHAT ACTUAL CANADIANS REALLY WANTED. THEY GET POWER, WE GET FREE HEALTH CARE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE.
PHONE 202 225 3121… AND TELL YOUR COUNTRY TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT.
WHILE OTHERS ARE CALLING THEM SNAKES… YOU CAN BECOME A SNAKE TAMER… IT ONLY TAKES ONE PHONE CALL A DAY ( 2 MINUTES) TO FIGHT THE SNAKES.
IT IS EITHER TRUMP DOES WHATEVER HE WANTS OR YOU PHONING 202 225 3121 EVERY DAY FOR TWO MINUTES AND DE-FANGING POTUS 45.
THE WHITE HOUSE IS YOURS FOR THE TAKING… 202 225 3121.

And the most important thing to do is to CALL. Write if you want, sign petitions, but CALL.

This is an amazing moment! Regular Americans are fighting back hard with peaceful protest, legal action, and social organizing that is ACTUALLY stopping Trump and altering the actions of the White House.
Remember that the Women’s March on Washington this year, the BIGGEST national protest in US history in which thousands joined in all around the world… was in idea thought up and Facebooked by a grandmother in Hawaii!!

And look at the motion created and being carried out by Americans. You all should be VERY encouraged by the unity that is building among the good and the shrinkage of the bad. EVERYONE is being woken up to how dangerous and stupid Trump is, and I don’t call Trump that as a reflex ad hominem attack. His actions are provably dangerous and stupid ergo he is acting and being as such…quod erat demonstrandum.
Americans may not have stood up like this for the interned Japanese Americans in the 40s, but it is VERY encouraging to see this new mixed generation doing it for immigrants and disenfranchised citizens. The People are standing up… and fighting for justice, and making it really hard for Darkness to keep making its moves.
Keep up the great work!

Great poem Robert. I hope that there’s an end to this madness that isn’t worse than what we have right now.
I think that the biggest problem with narcissists and demagogues is that they attempt to recreate their mindscapes in the real world, and the more power they have the more they bring their horrifying internal lives into reality. Right now the paranoids are spreading their paranoia, and their fanatics are eating it up like candy while the rest of us cringe.

Thank you, Dennis. Ours has become a frightening world, and I hope the voices of reason will be heard. I will call my representatives, and I will continue to voice opposition to this madness.

I started a colonial literature unit today, am teaching my students about “othering” and the “exotic other.” I created this unit last May when the world was a bit more stable. In some respects, I think this is the beginning of my stand. I will not be silent. I will not sit and wait. Thank you for this poem. Thank you for helping me feel just a little less alone.

Great poem. Despite differences, dialogue in any form is always better than violence. … and you are always welcomed to Canada!!

Does it make sense that, in a population of 318 million we can’t find 537 honest people qualified to make laws and govern?

Of course it doesn’t. Power, even the illusion of it, corrupts many people. It’s one thing to witness it on a small scale, petty level. It’s frightening to witness it at the national level.

I wonder if we could come up with the parameters for a select group, let’s say 50,000 qualified people, to be pulled from for service at random like jury duty. They serve for two years and then we randomly select from the pool again. They don’t spend their entire careers politicking to become part of the power base, they are just people with proven strength of character who also chose careers that gave them the proper experience.
Can we just do that? Know anyone who write that algorithm?

Love the poem and viewpoint Robert. It seems you have the same political dustbin in the US as we have in the UK. When it comes to vote the choices are the devil or the devil.
