My apologies to Caidan Walker and the Lucky Lizard Journal team. I somehow neglected last month to acknowledge their fine publication, in which two of my poems appear. Thanks very much for taking my pieces!

Yep.
I was due for a cry.

Snowfall here in mid-Missouri usually is scattered throughout the season, melting within a few days, but we started January with a foot over 2 -3 days, and temps to keep it around. As is typical, we also had sleet, but that fell after the first inch of snow and left 1/2 inch of ice under the rest of the snow that fell. Things were shut down for a couple of days, and temps have been lower than usual, so snow is still on the ground. At least the streets were clear after the second day. It’s funny how I worked outdoors in Buffalo winters like it was nothing, but now I get a chill going out for the morning paper.

We copied your weather. Other streets are clear, but ours is icy, and of course someone destroyed our mailbox.

Both such beautiful poems. So gentle, so full of truth and longing. (As for forgetting to mention these publications, that’s what happens when suddenly you’re swamped with them! :))

Thanks, Alison. And we also got a new puppy, who eats up a lot of time (not to mention the house). 😁

Ohhhh…you know how I feel about dogs. I am SO HAPPY for all of you!

Stephanie and I realized that there was no ideal time to get a dog, especially with my circumstances, so we jumped right in. Ha.

Weirdly, I had just gone through the following thought process: 1) It’s hard to get a dog, especially a puppy, when you’re dealing with a tough illness, and 2) but there’s never really a “right” time to get a puppy or add a new family member of any kind, and 3) a puppy would be a beautiful and fun and loving distraction/addition, so 4) of course they went ahead and got one! Name of pup? ❤

You’re welcome, Bob. I know the feeling of missing the land. When I lived to Florida, I was painfully homesick for deciduous trees.

I miss the landscape—the hills and twisted oaks, the thorny brush and cactus, the wildlife. They were all familiar.

I assume it has something to do with literary criticism, but what do I know? 🙂

As with other readers, I appreciated the zebra calcite poem for the feelings you expressed from that proverbially solid object. Bravo!
But then there was the tractor seated poem, and after last night’s reading I’ve now encountered poems with tractors in them two days in a row. That’s a small blessing for this kid who grew up in a small rural town.

There are days when I miss the tractor’s front
end loader. Having the right tool makes a load of difference!
