I am fortunate to have a writing space of any sort, much less a comfortable one.

This is the shack that launched a thousand rejections…or something like that. It’s small, with a 10 x 12 footprint, and is getting crowded inside. The photo was taken in August 2013, a few weeks before the interior was finished out. Note the inspector, Jackboy, with his ball.

The most important feature of the shack is the air conditioner. The bookcases are nice, too, but the heat would be unbearable without the a/c unit.

Books keep migrating here. I wonder why. The cattle dog spent many hours in the dog bed, but the Chihuahuas prefer the house.

I try to use the available space as efficiently as possible, hence the skinny book cases. The painting is by Stuckist painter Ron Throop, whose art and words inspire me.

The desk is usually messier than this…

Birds often smacked into the righthand window, until I added the little mobile fabricated from a piece of cedar and wooden bird ornaments.

Yes, that’s a stationary bike. The good thing about having such a small space is that I can ride the bike and reach over for a sip of beer without having to pause.

I’ve been banging on that guitar for forty years. It’s a little worn, but then so am I. The broadside is a Galway Kinnel poem, “Little Children’s Prayer,” which joins a small group of signed broadsides in the shack, featuring poems by Jane Hirshfield, Arthur Sze and Mei-Mei Berssenbrugge. Alas, I’m running low on wall space.
Nice!

A much needed piece of Heaven, a room of your own! Lovely, inspiring place. I have dreamed of a remodeled shed in my backyard, but my husband feels I’ll isolate myself, which is precisely the goal. Therefore, we compromised for a lounge chair under the mango tree, with an extension cord for the laptop. Cardinals and blue jays as background music, occasional showers as reminders to take a break. Enjoy your beautiful creative space!

It is, indeed! And yes, isolation, if only within the context of our small suburban lot, was the goal. The space is more than I ever dreamed I would have.

This. Is. AWESOME.
What’s up with those bookshelves that hold like 5 books on each shelf?
Although… you don’t have to worry the books falling over…

Room to expand! And I didn’t want to move books from the house to the shack. 😃

Your place is a beaut, but am equally lucky with a spot of my own. Trying to decipher your book titles….

I hope you post a few photos of your place. The books are a mishmash – mostly poetry, with a smattering of other enthusiasms thrown in. I, too, am drawn to people’s books!

Gosh, what a lovely place – would love one like that – alas – my laptop on my lap is what must suffice.

Well, it did take me about thirty years to get to this point! 😐

One reason I write short poems is I don’t need lots of space or comfort to do it in. I compose in bed, at a desk in our front room, at the kitchen table, on my bike, in the car (sometimes, I confess, while driving.) It’s tuff enough taking the muse’s dictations without worrying about comfort.

For years I wrote wherever I could, whenever I could, and I adapted my writing to those constrictions. Now I have the luxury of more time, and space. It is a glorious luxury. But it is a luxury, I admit.

Oh my goodness, I love your writing space. It seems perfect. I especially love the wall mounting of the rope bridge. I am trying hard to create my own writing space. it’s an undertaking that I fear will take years and I certainly can’t afford to create on outside my home, although I’d love to. One day maybe. Your space is so cozy. Thanks so much for sharing.

The space was pretty stark when I first moved in, but little by little it took shape. I’ll eventually have to take down the rope bridge poster to add more book cases, but it’s served its purpose!
