Shadow’s Tale
If I call,
will you
reply?
Questions
left unwritten
shape
themselves
like words
we see
but don’t
read. Signs
fade then
reappear,
and the oaks
droop
in the still
heat.
No rain
again. If
you call,
will I
reply?

hey, fun read. Could you help me out with the line breaks you’ve used?

i don’t understand it, what importance do the words hold on their own? Why should they require such a pause?

In this poem the words really don’t stand on their own – they require their companions. I wanted to offer the “idea” of a long, languid shadow, hence its appearance. It was originally a ten-line poem, but I stretched it out a bit. If read aloud, most of the pauses at the line breaks would be brief, barely noticeable.
